The Lorie Johnson Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization that was founded in February 2008 in honor of Lorie Johnson (Please see Lorie’s story). When our friend and namesake, Lorie Johnson, was diagnosed with breast cancer we realized that there is limited financial support for women with cancer, The Lorie Johnson Foundation was established. Our purpose is to assist women who have been diagnosed with cancer through education, awareness, active fundraising, and financial support for medical bills, living expenses, and travel.
Grants are made to eligible women based on urgency and need through an application process and are the sole discretion of the Board Members.
It was with great sorrow that the Board Members of the Lorie Johnson Foundation announced that Lorie stepped into eternity on Sunday, January 25, 2009. She lived magnificently in grace, strong in her faith, and beautiful in her smile. This Foundation has continued their purpose of assisting women and children who are battling cancer. Our purpose is not to contribute to cancer research, many organizations are doing that, but to continue assisting those who are battling cancer. We are covering medical expenses, travel expenses and living expenses for women who are unable financially to pay these costs due to loss of income and growing medical bills.
This Foundation has continued to pay expenses for a 34 year old with breast cancer; a 72 year old woman from Cullman, Alabama who needed help with travel expenses getting to her chemotherapy treatments; a single woman from Colorado whose insurance only covered 80% of her medical bills; a 3 year old from Birmingham, Alabama who is battling leukemia; a 61 year old whose disability payments were being delayed by the application process; a 31 year old who has been diagnosed with cancer in her liver; and a 41 year old in Sylacauga who has colin cancer. These are only a few who have been helped by this Foundation, we currently have three applications from Young Women who we haven't even begun to support!
The Lorie Johnson Foundation relies on the generosity of individual and corporate donors to continue the goal of raising awareness and financial support for women with cancer. Due to the gracious donations of individuals and corporations, the Lorie Johnson Foundation gave more than $56,000 in 2008 to women who are battling cancer. Since then we have continued to use the monies raised solely for the support of Cancer Patients who have applied to the Foundation for assistance. It was Lorie's belief that cancer brings enough stress all by itself without the added financial burden this disease brings when they are fighting for their life. It is our goal to relieve some of that stress through financial assistance for cancer related expenses.
